Jessica Somers

Cultural Background:  Odanak Abenaki, Ontario

Jessica Somers was born in Sudbury Ontario and is currently residing in Lavigne Ontario. She is Odanak Abenaki and her grandmother is also Métis. She is greatly influenced by her grandmother who enjoyed creating scenic and wildlife paintings.  Her father’s passion for carpentry and his hard work ethics and determination are what attributed to her success as an artist today.

Jessica loves creating paintings that represent knowledge of the natural world we learn and share through generations. Jessica is captivated by the teachings by elders in her community and her Nation. She creates art that connect to these teachings.  This honors her ancestors while also ensuring the knowledge is passed on. Jessica uses her artwork as self-reflection, a way of seeking peace, sharing knowledge, teaching moral lessons, and/or telling stories. Jessica believes that art has been survivance, a way of holding on to stories and history, embodying a way of life, and expressing and sharing Indigenous identities.

Jessica Somers est née à Sudbury, Ontario et réside actuellement à Lavigne, Ontario. Elle est Abénaquise d’Odanak et sa grand-mère est également Métisse. Elle est très influencée par sa grand-mère qui aimait peintres des paysages et des animaux sauvages. La passion de son père pour la menuiserie, son éthique de travail et sa détermination sont à l’origine de son succès en tant qu’artiste aujourd’hui.

Jessica aime créer des tableaux qui représentent la connaissance du monde naturel qui est apprise et partagée de génération en génération. Captivée par les enseignements des aînés de sa communauté et de sa nation, Jessica crée des œuvres d’art qui s’y rattachent. Elle honore ainsi ses ancêtres tout en veillant à la transmission de leurs savoirs. Ses œuvres d’art lui servent à l’autoréflexion et lui servent à rechercher la paix, partager des connaissances, enseigner des leçons de morale et à raconter des histoires. Jessica est convaincue que l’art est une survivance, un moyen de préserver les histoires et l’histoire, d’incarner un mode de vie et d’exprimer et de partager les identités autochtones.
