Del Russ (1970-2020)

Cultural Background: Haida/Metis/Ojibway

For the past twenty years, Del has been creating Haida artwork. He enjoys teaching others about the meanings that are central to the beliefs of the Haida Nation. Del’s artistic motivation comes from the teachings of his ancestors; therefore, his own personal visions and experiences are expressed through his love for painting and carving. Says the artist, “I create paintings because it helps to free my spirit.”

Pendant ces vingt dernières années, Del a créé des oeuvres d’art Haida. Son plaisir a
toujours été de nous initier sur les significations qui sont au centre des croyances des
peuples Haida. Ses motivations artistiques proviennent des enseignements de ses
ancêtres, c’est pourquoi il exprime ses propres visions et expériences personnelles à
travers son amour pour la peinture et la sculpture. Comme il nous le confie, « je peins
parce que cela m’aide à libérer mon esprit. »
