Paul Peel
(1860 – 1892) Paul Peel was almost certainly the best Canadian painter of his day, but Paul Peel did virtually none of his work in Canada. He was born in London, Ontario, in 1860 and seems to have known from the beginning that painting was the one thing he wanted to do. He studied with several teachers in Philadelphia, in London, England, and, after 1880, in Paris, where he married and made his home. He was a steady and prolific worker, and paintings for sale. His career was only really beginning when he died in Paris of tuberculosis at the age of 32.
