Kevin Pee-ace

Cultural Background: Cree, Yellowquill First Nation and Peter Chapman First Nation, Saskatchewan

Artist Kevin L. Pee-ace was born in Kelvington, Saskatchewan and is a member of the Yellowquill First Nation and Peter Chapman First Nation. Kevin’s exposure to art happened at an early age. He recalled seeing the drawings and paintings created by his uncle, Jerry Whitehead, who would later become instrumental in helping to launch his career. Upon graduating from high school in 1991, Kevin went on to complete a Fine Arts Studio diploma program from UCFV – Abbottsford, British Columbia. During the mid-nineties, he explored various programs in Art History, Archaeology, Anthropology and Native Studies at Capilano College in North Vancouver.

Returning to Saskatchewan in 1995, Kevin enrolled at the U of S to continue his studies but quickly realized that art was becoming a more prominent part of his life and so he chose to commit to it full-time. Art and education have been constants throughout his career; this led to a collaborative approach in creating class murals with many schools throughout Saskatchewan. He currently resides in Saskatoon, SK painting full-time. He is married and proud father to three children. He has three grandchildren; one grandson, Daniel, and two granddaughters, Raven and Aaliyah.

L’artiste Kevin L. Pee-ace est né à Kelvington, en Saskatchewan, et est membre de la Première nation Yellowquill et de la Première nation Peter Chapman. Kevin a été exposé à l’art dès son plus jeune âge. Il se souvient d’avoir vu les dessins et les tableaux créés par son oncle, Jerry Whitehead, qui allait plus tard contribuer à lancer sa carrière. Après avoir obtenu son diplôme d’études secondaires en 1991, Kevin a suivi un programme pour l’obtention d’un diplôme en beaux-arts à l’UCFV (University of the Fraser Valley) d’Abbottsford, en Colombie-Britannique. Au milieu des années 1990, il a exploré divers programmes en histoire de l’art, archéologie, anthropologie et études autochtones au Capilano College de North Vancouver.

De retour en Saskatchewan en 1995, Kevin s’est inscrit à l’Université de la Saskatchewan pour poursuivre ses études, mais il s’est rapidement rendu compte que l’art prenait une place de plus en plus importante dans sa vie et a donc choisi de s’y consacrer à plein temps. L’art et l’éducation ont été des éléments constitutifs tout au long de sa carrière, ce qui l’a amené à collaborer à la création de murales avec des classes de nombreuses écoles de la Saskatchewan. Il réside actuellement à Saskatoon, en Saskatchewan, où il peint à plein temps. Il est marié et fier père de trois enfants. Il a trois petits-enfants : un petit-fils, Daniel, et deux petites-filles, Raven et Aaliyah.
