Cultural Background: Mi’kmaq First Nation, Nova Scotia

David Brooks was Mi’kmaq First Nation, born and raised in Nova Scotia, Canada. He was from Indian Brook First Nation where he spent the majority of his life with his family.

Through his young adulthood he traveled and lived in various locations throughout Canada and the United States. In 1983, David began to paint when he met Phillip Young in Toronto; from Phillip he learned basic painting techniques.  David once shared “When I paint, I do it as much for other people as for myself. I hope that my paintings can be a sense of strength for our people. I try to reach into the distant past when we were strong people and I try to find ways to express that strength for people today. I don’t start a painting until I’ve felt what it will mean. If we can locate strength from the past we can overcome the problems of the present. I hope my paintings can suggest a path to the future.”

David Brooks était originaire de la Première nation de Mi’kmaq, il est né et a grandi en Nouvelle-Écosse au Canada. Il était de la Première nation d’Indian Brook où il a passé la majeure partie de sa vie avec sa famille.

Au cours de son jeune âge, il a voyagé et a vécu à divers endroits au Canada et aux États-Unis. En 1983, David commence à peindre à sa rencontre avec Phillip Young à Toronto; il a appris les techniques de base de la peinture de Phillip.  David s’est confié une fois. « Lorsque je peins, je le fais autant pour les autres que pour moi-même. Je souhaite que mes peintures soient une force pour notre peuple. J’essaye de remonter dans le passé lointain où nous étions un peuple fort et j’essaye de trouver les moyens d’exprimer cette force aux gens d’aujourd’hui. Je ne me mets à peindre que si j’ai ressentis ce que cette peinture signifiera. Si nous pouvons déceler la force du passé, nous pouvons surmonter les problèmes du présent. Je souhaite que mon œuvre soit une voie vers l’avenir ».
