April White

Cultural Background: Haida, Haida Gwaii of the Yahgu’jaanaas Raven Clan

April White received her Bachelor of Science degree in geology from the University of British Columbia. She has worked as geologist in remote areas of the Canadian West, an experience which has been of assistance in developing the visual faculty essential to creating her works of art. Entirely self-taught, April’s natural inclination stems from her Haida heritage, where being an artist is an honored profession. April White was born on Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands), of Yahgu’jaanaas Raven Clan. Through her father, she is a direct descendent of the renowned Stastas Eagle Chief and Haida artist, Charles Edenshaw.

“The Haida have a saying, ‘Life is like living on the edge of a knife. When you walk, watch your steps or you will fall off the edge of the earth.’ Inherent in the creation of my art is the suspense and awareness of the knife’s edge.”

April a obtenu son Baccalauréat en Science de la Géologie de l'Université de la Colombie-Britannique. Elle a travaillé en géologie dans les régions éloignées de l'ouest Canadien. Ces expériences lui ont donné les facultés visuelles nécessaires pour réaliser ses oeuvres d'art. Autodidacte, le talent naturel d'April est issu de son héritage Haida, où le métier d'artiste est hautement convoité. April White est née à Haida Gwaii (Îles Charlotte), dans le clan Yahgu’jaanaas Raven. Par le biais de son père, elle est descendante directe du grand Chef Stastas Eagle et artiste Haida, Charles Edenshaw.

“Les Haida ont un dicton: 'La vie c'est comme marcher sur la lame d'un couteau. Quand on marche il faut se soucier de ne pas trébucher parce qu'on pourrait tomber en bas de la Terre.' Au centre de ma création gît le suspense et la conscience de cette lame.”
