Garnet Tobacco, a Cree artist, was born on February 6th, 1964 in Moose Lake, Manitoba. The Buffalo is his family crest symbol.

Garnet, a prolific talent, painted for over twenty years and occasionally sculpted in soapstone and wood. He apprenticed under Isaac Bignell, a prominent artist who has passed away. Bignell’s style and form greatly influenced Garnet who did his best to preserve it. Fluid lines, soft earthy tones against simple stylized backgrounds are all characteristics that have attracted many collectors. Garnet has works in private collections throughout Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Australia, U.S.A and Canada. His work has also been displayed at the Art Expo in Calgary.

Some of the animals that he loved to paint are those common to the plains region such as bison, herons, eagles, and hawks, but he also explored the marine world with his salmon, whales and turtles, as well as some truly delightful works depicting subjects like the butterfly, hummingbirds and loons.

Garnet’s friendship with his teacher, Isaac Bignell, was something he treasured, so preserving Isaac’s style kept his identity alive for many to understand and collect.

Garnet, un talent prolifique, peint depuis plus de vingt ans et sculpte parfois dans la pierre à savon et le bois. Il a fait son apprentissage avec Isaac Bignell, un artiste distingué qui nous a malheureusement quitté. Le style et la forme de Bignell a grandement influencé Garnet qui le représente bien encore aujourd’hui. Lignes fluides, tons doux de terre contre de simples fonds stylisés sont toutes des caractéristiques qui ont attiré de nombreux collectionneurs. Garnet a des œuvres dans des collections privées en Allemagne, Autriche, Suisse, Australie, aux États-Unis et au Canada. Son travail a également été affiché à l’Expo d’Art à Calgary.

Certains des animaux qu’il aime peindre sont ceux qui sont communs à la région des plaines comme le bison, les hérons, les aigles, et les faucons, mais il explore aussi l’univers marin avec le saumon, les baleines et les tortues, ainsi que quelques œuvres vraiment remarquables symbolisant des sujets tels que les papillons, les colibris et les huards.

L’amitié de Garnet envers son maître, Isaac Bignell, était quelque chose qu’il chérissait, alors préserver ainsi le style d’Isaac lui permet de garder son identité vivante, et de le faire connaître et comprendre.
