Cultural Background: Tlingit, Yukon

“The works that I’m most known for are paintings of West Coast Tlingit people in masks, button blankets and woven hats, many of them dancing,” says Jean. “I also love to paint images of moccasins, mukluks, mitts, jackets and snowshoes, all the things I saw being created by my relatives as I was growing up.” Jean’s heritage is Tlingit and she spent years of her life in the Yukon. She now thinks back and realizes how inspired and encouraged she has been by the creativity that was all around her during childhood.

“I have a picture of my great-grandfather making snowshoes,” says Jean. “I am certain that he didn’t think of himself as an artist, nor did most of my relatives. They were just making functional things that we needed to get by in the northern environment. Now I appreciate the great skill, love and artistry that were put into everything they made.”

Les œuvres pour lesquelles je suis le plus connue sont des peintures de masques, de couvertures de boutons et de chapeaux tissés représentant des Tlingits de la côte Ouest, dont beaucoup dansent », explique Jean. « J’aime aussi peindre des images de mocassins, de mukluks, de mitaines, de vestes et de raquettes, tout ce que j’ai vu être créé par mes proches alors que je grandissais. » L’héritage de Jean est Tlingit et elle a passé des années de sa vie au Yukon. Elle réfléchit maintenant et réalise à quel point elle a été inspirée et encouragée par la créativité qui l’a entourée pendant son enfance.

J’ai une photo de mon arrière-grand-père qui fabrique des raquettes », explique Jean. « Je suis certain qu’il ne se considérait pas comme un artiste, pas plus que la plupart de mes proches. Ils fabriquaient simplement des objets fonctionnels dont nous avions besoin pour survivre dans l’environnement nordique. Maintenant, j’apprécie les grandes compétences, l’amour et le talent artistique qui ont été mis dans tout ce qu’ils ont fabriqué.
