Stephanie Kewistep

Cultural Background:  Saulteaux, Yellow Quill First Nation, Saskatchewan

Stephanie Kewistep was born on the Yellow Quill Reserve and moved to Vancouver BC at a very young age. Stephanie did not start painting until adulthood.  She trained under the supervision of Heiltsuk artist Ben Houstie and Northern Tutchone artist Richard Shorty. Stephanie’s work is a synthesis of various traditional art styles – using modified versions of the ovals of the Haida traditions, the flowing lines of the Woodland style – and made each piece her own. She worked for many years producing original paintings, limited edition prints, drums, paddles, and t-shirts. Her artwork has been shown in galleries throughout British Columbia, as well as in private collections and various organizations in a worldwide market.

Stephanie Kewistep est née dans la réserve de Yellow Quill et a déménagé à Vancouver en Colombie-Britannique à un très jeune âge. Stéphanie n’a commencé à peindre qu’à l’âge adulte.  Elle a été formée sous la supervision de l’artiste heiltsuk Ben Housie et de l’artiste tutchone du nord Richard Shorty. L'œuvre de Stephanie est une synthèse de divers styles d’art traditionnel – se servant des versions modifiées d’ovales des traditions haidas, des lignes fluides du style Woodland – et fait de chaque pièce sa propre œuvre. Elle a travaillé pendant plus de onze ans à la production de peintures originales, d’estampes en édition limitée, de tambours, de palettes et de t-shirts. Ses œuvres ont été exposées dans des galeries partout en Colombie-Britannique, ainsi que dans des collections privées et diverses organisations du marché international.
