Bill Helin

Cultural Background: Tsimshian/Norweigan, Prince Rupert BC

Bill Helin’s proud native Indian heritage has played an important role in his growth as an artist. Helin is of the Tsimshian Indian Nation, born and raised in the Northwest Coastal Community of Prince Rupert, B.C.

For the most part, Helin’s artistry is self-taught. He learned from books and picked up tips and encouragements from friends. One friend, Art Sterrit, sponsored Bill at K’San, B.C.’s famous Indian Art and Carving School at Hazelton. Since then, Bill Helin has never looked back.

At first, he concentrated on silver carving, then gold. Now, he also enjoys woodcarving of bowls, paddles, masks, plaques and totem poles. In February 1988, Helin attended the renowned Gemology Institute of America in Santa Monica, California, where he completed advanced courses in Goldsmithing and Gemology. Today he lives on Vancouver Island and works out of his studio/home at the French Creek Marina near Parksville.

Le fier patrimoine autochtone de Bill Helin a joué un trés grand rôle dans sa vie d’artiste, Helin, membre de la nation Tsimshian, est né et a passé sa jeunesse dans la communité côtiere du nordouest de Prince Rupert, C.-B.

Helin a acquis la pluspart de ses connaissances artistiques de lui-même. Il a appris de livres et de conseils et d’encouragements d’amis. Un de ses amis, Art Sterrit, a aidé Bill à aller à K’San, l’école célébre d’art et de sculpture et gravure autochtone située à Hazelton. Depuis, Bill n’a jamais regardé en arrière.

Tout d’abord, il s’est concentré sur l’argent sculpté, puis l’or. Maintenant il sculpte du bois, tel que des bols, des avirons, des masques, des plaques et des totems. En février 1988, Helin est allé au célébre Institut américain de gemmologie à Santa Monica, en Californie, où il a pris des cours avancés d’orfevrerie et de gemmologie. Aujourd-hui, il demeure sur l’Ile de Vancouver et travaille dans sons studio chez lui à la marina French Creek près de Parksville.
