Lawren S. Harris

Lawren S. Harris was born in Brantford, Ontario, into a wealthy family, which freed him from the necessity of working to earn a living, and allowed him to concentrate on his art throughout his life. Harris was the main catalyst and leader in the creation of the Group of Seven in 1920, motivated by his belief in the need for a distinctly Canadian art movement. As an artist, he explored all parts of the country ranging from urban scenes in Toronto, to the landscapes of Algonquin Park, Algoma, Lake Superior, the Rocky Mountains and Arctic. In the latter part of his life, his spiritual Theosophical beliefs turned him towards abstraction.

 

Lawren S. Harris est né à Brantford, en Ontario, dans une famille aisée, ce qui l’a libéré de la nécessité de travailler pour gagner sa vie, et lui a permis de se concentrer sur son art tout au long de sa vie. Harris a été le catalyseur principal et chef de file dans la création du Groupe des Sept en 1920, motivé par sa croyance en la nécessité d’un mouvement d’art typiquement canadien. En tant qu’artiste, il a exploré toutes les régions du pays, allant de scènes urbaines à Toronto, aux paysages du parc Algonquin, Algoma, le lac Supérieur, les montagnes Rocheuses et de l’Arctique. Dans la dernière partie de sa vie, ses croyances théosophiques spirituelles l’ont rivés vers l’abstraction.
