Kurt Flett

Cultural Background: Oji-Cree, Garden Hill First Nations, Manitoba

Kurt Flett is an Oji-Cree (Swampy Cree) from Garden Hill First Nation in the Island Lake region of northern Manitoba. Born in 1956, and raised at Garden Hill, Manitoba, he began drawing with pencil crayons around age 11 and was influenced by such artists as Jackson Beardy and Stanley Monias.

He worked as a teacher for ten years before pursuing a full-time artistic career in 1986. Kurt's journey would lead him into devoting all of his time doing what he loves – sketching, painting, and illustrating. Kurt joined with fellow community members Jeff Monias and Eddy Munroe in popularizing the Woodland school of Aboriginal art.

His work is exhibited across Canada, Europe and the United States, and was strongly influenced by Woodland Cree artistic traditions. A red sun was a characteristic element of his works. He died on the 8^th of May 2011, from complications of diabetes. He was buried in the Aboriginal Memorial Gardens.

Kurt Flett est un oji-cri (Moskégon), de la Première nation de Garden Hill dans la région de

Island Lake au nord du Manitoba. Né en 1956, et élevé à Garden Hill, au Manitoba, il commence à dessiner au crayon autour de 11 ans et a été influencé par des artistes tels que Jackson Beardy et Stanley Monias.

Il a travaillé comme professeur pendant dix ans avant de poursuivre une carrière artistique à plein temps en 1986. Son parcours l'amènera à consacrer tout son temps à faire ce qu'il aime; le dessin, la peinture et l'illustration . Kurt s'est joint à ses compatriotes de la communauté Jeff Monias et Eddy Munroe dans la popularisation de l'école Woodland de l'art autochtone.

Son travail est exposé partout au Canada, en Europe et aux Etats-Unis, et a été fortement influencé par les traditions artistiques des Cris des bois.  Un soleil rouge était un element caractéristique de ses oeuvres. Il est décédé le 8 mai 2011, de complications dû au diabète. enterré dans le jardin commémoratif autochtone.
