Sonia De Grand'Maison
Cultural Background: Pekuakamiulnuatsh (Ilnu) Nation of Mashteuiatsh Quebec
Sonia De Grand’Maison is a multidisciplinary artist and member of the Pekuakamiulnuatsh (Ilnu) Nation of Mashteuiatsh. Her cultural trajectory, a blend of Quebec and First Nations roots, has been influenced by discriminatory laws that have long excluded women from Indigenous cultures. Her Indigenous roots are an alliance of the Abenaki nation, who evolved on Ilnu territory, hence her interest in blending these two ways of life and visions of the land in her work. Through her art and her profession as an art therapist, she aims to shed light on the interconnected links between human and nature, and to spread the cultural teachings she has received.
