Roya Azim was born in 1964 in the rural city of Tehran, Iran. The daughter of a well-off military general, Roya and her family had the opportunity to move to Atlanta's Dobbins Air Force base in 1979. In the American system, Roya was raised with a broad liberal arts education. At the college level, she complemented the humanistic study of art history and literature with the practical skills of business administration. She excelled in both areas.

Although discouraged by family and friends, art became a central focus in Roya's life when she began working as an apprentice and assistant for Babak Emanuel, a renowned artist sharing her Persian heritage. At first she learned only fundamental artistic techniques with Emanuel, and much of her time was spent in an administrative role. However, her natural and unique talent became quickly self-evident, and her title was changed to Artistic Assistant. After five years of working with Emanuel, Roya decided to focus exclusively on developing her own style.

As a beginning, Roya has chosen to explore the theme of golf in several of the series she has produced thus far. The sport represents much of the American customs that simultaneously fascinate her - such as masculinity, wealth, nature, recreation, and competition. The sport also provides a source of identification for Roya, as it displays the same nuances as many of her own cultural traditions. Moreover, the meticulous skill and diligence found in this leisure activity are mirrored in Roya's own approach to her work. Like the sport of golf, Roya's images indicate that a precision of detail and an attention to form are as important as the easy grace and melodious balance of the overall composition.

Although Roya's series have been only recently exhibited, several private and public institutions have already enthusiastically collected her works across the country.

Roya Azim est née en 1964 dans la ville rurale de Téhéran, en Iran. Fille d’un général militaire aisé, Roya et sa famille ont eu l’opportunité de déménager en 1979 à la base aérienne Dobbins d’Atlanta. Dans le système américain, Roya a reçu une éducation large en arts libéraux. Au niveau universitaire, elle a complété ses études humanistes en histoire de l’art et en littérature par des compétences pratiques en administration des affaires. Elle a excellé dans ces deux domaines.

Bien que découragée par sa famille et ses amis, l’art est devenu un élément central de la vie de Roya lorsqu’elle a commencé à travailler comme apprentie et assistante pour Babak Emanuel, un artiste renommé partageant son héritage perse. Au début, elle a appris uniquement les techniques artistiques fondamentales avec Emanuel, et elle passait beaucoup de temps à des tâches administratives. Après cinq ans de collaboration avec Emanuel, Roya a décidé de se consacrer exclusivement au développement de son propre style.

Pour commencer, Roya a choisi d’explorer le thème du golf dans plusieurs séries qu’elle a produites jusqu’à présent. Ce sport représente beaucoup des coutumes américaines qui la fascinent simultanément – telles que la masculinité, la richesse, la nature, les loisirs et la compétition. Le golf lui offre aussi une source d’identification, car il présente des nuances semblables à plusieurs de ses propres traditions culturelles. De plus, la précision et la diligence nécessaires à cette activité de loisir se reflètent dans l’approche rigoureuse que Roya applique à son travail. Tout comme le golf, ses images démontrent qu’une précision dans le détail et une attention à la forme sont aussi importantes que la grâce naturelle et l’équilibre mélodieux de la composition dans son ensemble.

Bien que les séries de Roya aient été exposées récemment, plusieurs institutions privées et publiques à travers le pays ont déjà collectionné ses œuvres avec enthousiasme.
