Our relationship to the environment is complex and mysterious. Where we live speaks volumes about who we are and what we value. Living in one place for a period of time enables us to know it intimately, to feel the rhythms of the seasons. A place can become such a part of us that we take its images with us even when we leave.

Painting is a natural response to land for me. Raised in a rural community, I sought out the fast-paced life of New York but found it lacking in something I could not describe. When I returned to the country, I began to relate to the comfort, mystery, and silence embodied in the landscape. There is an eternity present in the land that was here before we were, and will continue in its cycles long after we are gone. There is almost a necessary spiritual connection that we have with the land that sustains our very lives, and in the increasingly urban lifestyles that many have adopted, that connection becomes faint and distant. My hope is that through painting I can show appreciation for my environment, in all its starkness and softness, warmth and loneliness.

Notre relation avec l’environnement est complexe et mystérieuse. L’endroit où nous vivons en dit long sur qui nous sommes et ce que nous valorisons. Vivre dans un même endroit pendant un certain temps nous permet de le connaître intimement, de ressentir le rythme des saisons. Un lieu peut devenir une telle partie de nous que nous emportons ses images avec nous, même quand nous le quittons.

Pour moi, la peinture est une réponse naturelle à la terre. Élevé dans une communauté rurale, j’ai cherché la vie effrénée de New York, mais j’y ai trouvé un manque d’une chose que je ne pouvais pas décrire. Quand je suis retourné à la campagne, j’ai commencé à ressentir le confort, le mystère et le silence que le paysage incarne. Il y a une éternité présente dans la terre qui existait avant nous, et qui continuera à travers ses cycles bien après notre départ. Il y a presque une connexion spirituelle nécessaire que nous avons avec la terre qui soutient nos vies mêmes, et dans les modes de vie de plus en plus urbains que plusieurs adoptent, cette connexion devient faible et lointaine. J’espère qu’à travers la peinture, je pourrai montrer mon appréciation pour mon environnement, dans toute sa rudesse et sa douceur, sa chaleur et sa solitude.
