Lawrence Hislop is a young Canadian photographer, who has traveled the world extensively while working for the United Nations. He has a BA in Political Science from Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec, and an MA in International Policy from the Monterey Institute of International Studies based in California. He studied digital video production at the Art Institute of Vancouver; and apprenticed for three years in Carmel, CA with the acclaimed U.S. landscape / architecture photographer, Morley Baer (1916 -1995).

Working as a large format photographer, Hislop embraces the timeless disciplines of Ansel Adams and of his mentor, Baer. Working within the exacting standards of the zone system of black and white photography - where every shade of grey is meticulously articulated - Hislop pursues his own contemporary landscapes.

He is most captivated by innocuous, 'transition' areas - factory districts, river junctions and coastlines. Watch Towers, boat moulds, industrial pipelines, weathered piers; mining sites and several other 'ordinary' subjects are made distinct by Hislop. His commanding compositions and impeccable execution play a part in this achievement. But there is something more too. Hislop's ‘emotional grasp of light' imparts an ineffable quality to these places. Perhaps it is this extrasensory quality that makes these common views extraordinary.

Hislop has developed three extensive bodies of work based in Vancouver, California and Norway. He is engaged once again in producing new architectural and landscape photos, and uses the accumulation of his skills and experience to create unique images focusing on the human/natural environment.

Il détient un baccalauréat en sciences politiques de l’Université Concordia à Montréal, Québec, ainsi qu’une maîtrise en politiques internationales de l’Institut Monterey d’études internationales, en Californie. Il a étudié la production vidéo numérique à l’Art Institute of Vancouver et a été apprenti pendant trois ans à Carmel, en Californie, auprès du célèbre photographe américain de paysages et d’architecture Morley Baer (1916-1995).

Photographe travaillant en grand format, Hislop adopte les disciplines intemporelles d’Ansel Adams et de son mentor Baer. Respectant les normes rigoureuses du système de zones en photographie noir et blanc — où chaque nuance de gris est méticuleusement maîtrisée — Hislop poursuit sa propre vision contemporaine des paysages.

Il est particulièrement attiré par les zones apparemment banales et de transition : quartiers industriels, confluences de rivières et côtes maritimes. Tours de guet, moules à bateaux, pipelines industriels, quais usés, sites miniers et plusieurs autres sujets " ordinaires " sont rendus uniques par Hislop. Ses compositions puissantes et son exécution impeccable contribuent à cet effet, mais il y a plus : la " maîtrise émotionnelle de la lumière " de Hislop confère à ces lieux une qualité ineffable. C’est peut-être cette dimension extrasensorielle qui transforme ces vues communes en images extraordinaires.

Hislop a développé trois importantes séries de travaux basés à Vancouver, en Californie et en Norvège. Il est actuellement engagé dans la production de nouvelles photographies d’architecture et de paysages, mettant à profit ses compétences et son expérience accumulées pour créer des images uniques qui explorent la relation entre l’environnement humain et naturel.
