Cultural Background: Haida, Prince Rupert, BC

Garner was born in Prince Rupert, BC, Canada and he was raised in Skidegate, on Haida Gwaii on May 27th, 1958. He is the nephew of prolific argillite carver, Rufus Moody. Garner was artistic as a child. He remembers drawing a great deal from age 9 onwards, and he carved his first piece of argillite when he was 15. Garner moved to Vancouver in 1987 and was invited to help Bill Reid work on his full-scale 'Lootaas' canoe. While he was in Vancouver, Garner learned a great deal about Haida design and argillite carving from Nelson Cross, Alfie Collinson, Ron Wilson (Gitsgah) and Clayton Gladstone. Garner currently lives on Haida Gwaii and focuses on argillite, gold jewelry and carving in red and yellow cedar.

Garner est né à Prince Rupert, en Colombie-Britannique (Canada), et a grandi à Skidegate, sur Haida Gwaii, le 27 mai 1958. Il est le neveu du célèbre sculpteur sur ardoise, Rufus Moody. Garner montrait déjà un talent artistique dès l’enfance. Il se souvient avoir beaucoup dessiné à partir de l’âge de 9 ans, et il a sculpté sa première pièce en ardoise à l’âge de 15 ans.
En 1987, Garner a déménagé à Vancouver, où il a été invité à aider Bill Reid dans la réalisation de son canot grandeur nature, le Lootaas. Pendant son séjour à Vancouver, Garner a beaucoup appris sur le design haïda et la sculpture sur ardoise auprès de Nelson Cross, Alfie Collinson, Ron Wilson (Gitsgah) et Clayton Gladstone.
Garner vit actuellement à Haida Gwaii et se consacre à la sculpture de l’ardoise, à la joaillerie en or, ainsi qu’à la sculpture du cèdre rouge et jaune.
