Cultural Background: Haida, Terrace, BC

Lon French is a Haida artist who lives in Victoria. He was born in Terrace, BC in 1966 and is from the Old Massett Village Council on Haida Gwaii and belongs to the Raven Clan.

“I’m a Haida graphic artist and have been creating Haida art since 2012. At that time, I decided I needed to change the direction of my life. This is when I started learning about my family from Haida Gwaii. I researched Haida art and learned the basic forms. Then I started playing with designs and developed my own style. That style has evolved and continues to evolve the more I create new work. I have tried to stay true to the traditional Haida style and have for the most part, but I feel that to grow as an artist I must be open to change. As I continue on my new path, I try new things and learn more about tradition and this is reflected in my work. I’m mainly a self taught artist but I was also taught for a short time by George Hunt Jr. at S J Willis Secondary back in the early 1980’s. I hope you enjoy my designs and follow my journey of discovery in the world of Haida art.”

Lon French est un artiste haïda qui vit à Victoria. Il est né en 1966 à Terrace, en Colombie-Britannique et fait partie du Conseil du Village de l'Old Massett à Haida Gwaii et appartient au clan Corbeau.
“Je suis un artiste graphique haïda et je crée de l’art haïda depuis 2012. À cette époque, j’ai décidé qu’il était temps de changer la direction de ma vie. C’est alors que j’ai commencé à m’informer sur ma famille originaire de Haida Gwaii. J’ai fait des recherches sur l’art haïda et j’en ai appris les formes de base. Ensuite, j’ai commencé à expérimenter avec des motifs et à développer mon propre style. Ce style a évolué et continue d’évoluer au fur et à mesure que je crée de nouvelles œuvres.
J’ai essayé de rester fidèle au style traditionnel haïda — ce que j’ai fait dans l’ensemble — mais je pense que, pour évoluer en tant qu’artiste, je dois rester ouvert au changement. Alors que je poursuis mon nouveau chemin, j’explore de nouvelles idées et j’en apprends davantage sur la tradition, ce qui se reflète dans mon travail.
Je suis principalement un artiste autodidacte, mais j’ai aussi reçu un enseignement pendant une courte période de George Hunt Jr. à l’école secondaire S.J. Willis, au début des années 1980.
