Clemance Wescoupe (1951 - 2018)

Clemence Wescoupe, Ojibwa, of Saulteaux background, was born in 1951 on the Long Plain Reserve of Southern Manitoba. His native name is “Oo-za-biness” which means “Brown Partridge”. Wescoupe’s work began following the early Woodland and Prairie Aboriginal tradition of such artists as Daphne Odjig and Jackson Beardy and in 1976 started his own graceful, flowing lines and stylized forms, emerging somewhat at the same time Benjamin Chee Chee’s work was introduced into the Winnipeg area. Clemence emerged in the mid-seventies when Robert Checkwitch of Great Grasslands Graphics first saw his work and began publishing Wescoupe’s silkscreen prints.

His command of negative space and the fine flowing elegant lines, reach deep into a cultural artistic tradition, seeking Spiritual Harmony.

Guided with a powerful sensitivity to emotions his art is concerned primarily with spiritual guardianship. Nature in its pure form provides an endless source of inspiration, yet many of its images are familiar and its appeal immediate and profound. A self taught artist, he achieved national and international acclaim in his early youth. Undoubtedly, he is the most collected Indian artist.

Clémence Wescoupe, Ojibwa, d’origine Saulteaux, est né en 1951 dans la Réserve de Long Plain du Sud-Manitoba.. Son nom autochtone est “Oo-za-biness” qui signifie “Perdrix Brune”. Le travail de Wescoupe a commencé suivant la tradition d’artistes autochtones de Woodland et des Prairies tels que Daphne Odjig et Jackson Beardy, et en 1976 a commencé à faire ses gracieuses lignes fluides et formes stylisées, émergeant à peu près en même temps que le travail de Benjamin Chee Chee a été introduit dans la région de Winnipeg. Clémence a percé dans les années soixante-dix, lorsque Robert Checkwitch des ‘Graphiques des Grandes Prairies’ a vu son travail et a commencé à publier les oeuvres sérigraphiées de Wescoupe.

Sa maîtrise du vide et des lignes arrondies, fines et élégantes, atteint en profondeur une tradition artistique culturelle, recherchant l’harmonie spirituelle.

Guidé avec une sensibilité puissante aux émotions, son art s’intéresse essentiellement à la tutelle spirituelle. La nature dans sa forme pure est une source inépuisable d’inspiration, mais beaucoup de ses images sont familières et son approche est immédiate et profonde. Un artiste autodidacte, il a obtenu une reconnaissance nationale et internationale dans sa prime jeunesse. Sans aucun doute, il est l’artiste amérindien le plus prisé.
