Cultural Background: Namgis Maamtaglia and Mamalilikala, Alert Bay, BC

Rande Cook (Galapa) was born in 1977 in the northern Vancouver Island town of Alert Bay, B.C. Rande spent his early years in Alert Bay where his grandparents, Gus and Florence Matlipi, raised him with strong cultural views and deep ties to his rich cultural heritage as part of the Namgis, Maamtigila, and Mamalilikala tribes. Rande’s grandfather taught him the essential elements of art and impressed upon him how art both reflects and connects to the culture and it’s importance in maintaining and preserving a flourishing culture. Among his influences, Rande credits his brother Will Cook Jr., William Wasden Jr., Beau Dick, Don Yeomans, Bruce Alfred, and, most recently, John Livingston.

During his apprenticeship with John, Rande has explored woodcarving, mask making, box design, and numerous other forms of coastal First Nations art.
“From all these mentors,” Rande says, “I have developed an appreciate for coastal artists and their many variations of style and expression.”

Rande Cook (Galapa) est né en 1977 à Alert Bay, au nord de l’île de Vancouver, CB. Rande a grandi dans cette petite ville, élevé par ses grands-parents, Gus et Florence Matlipi, qui lui ont inculqué de fortes valeurs culturelles et un profond attachement à son riche patrimoine autochtone des tribus Namgis, Maamtigila et Mamalilikala. Son grand-père lui a appris les éléments essentiels de l’art ainsi que l’importance d’entretenir et préserver une culture florissante puisque l’art se doit d’être tout à la fois le reflet et une connexion à sa propre culture. Rande reconnaît les influences de son frère, Will Cook Jr., de William Wasden Jr., de Beau Dick, Don Yeomans, Bruce Alfred et plus récemment, celle de John Livingston. Durant son apprentissage avec John, Rande a exploré la sculpture sur bois, la fabrication de masque, la stylique de boîte et de nombreuses autres formes d’art des Premières nations de la côte.
Rande déclare que : “Grâce à tous mes mentors, je suis arrivé à développer une appréciation des artistes vivant sur la côte ainsi que de la grande variété de leurs styles et expressions artistiques.”
